Our Story
The Beginning
Manhattan Project
The Manhattan Project was integrated by the most intelligent people in the world at the time. The scientists that contributed to the project included Einstein, Curie, Niels Bohr, Fermi, von Neumann, and hundreds of scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
It began when Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt regarding Germany’s research on the atomic bomb, and their attempt to create one. Einstein suggested that the United States could start working to create an atomic bomb soon.
Los Alamos Laboratory
Los Alamos laboratory was secretly founded in New Mexico in 1943 during World War II, centralized facility to coordinate the scientific research of the Manhattan Project.
Chosen for its remote yet relatively accessible location, it served as the main hub for conducting and coordinating nuclear research, bringing together some of the world’s most famous scientists, among them numerous Nobel Prize winners.
Santa Fe Institute
The Santa Fe Institute was founded in 1984 by scientists George Cowan, David Pines, Stirling Colgate, Murray Gell Mann, Nick Metropolis, Herb Anderson, Peter A. Carruthers, and Richard
Slansky, most of them coming from Los Alamos laboratory.
SFI’s original mission was to disseminate the notion of a new interdisciplinary research area called complexity theory or simply complex system.
Santa Fe Associates
In September 1995, colleagues at SFI Howard Sherman, L. M. [Mike] Simmons, Bruce Abell and Kevin Egan, created Santa Fe Center for Emergent Strategies now SANTA FE ASSOCIATES in order to share ideas and experiences as a way to continue improving.
In 2014 the company name was simplified with an acronyms SFAI.
